Children's Hospital Honors 2007 Career Contribution Award Recipients

COLUMBUS, OH - 9/5/2007

Children’s Hospital staff and friends gathered September 5, to honor four recipients of the 2007 Career Contribution Award. The special distinction is awarded by Columbus Children’s medical staff to a select group of its most highly respected peers. It is given to those who, in the eyes of their fellow physicians, have exemplified themselves through a lifetime commitment to maintaining the highest quality of health care service and helping Columbus Children’s build a trademark reputation as a local, regional and national leader in pediatrics.

The 2007 recipients are as follows:
Donna A. Caniano, MD, General Pediatric Surgery
Dr. Caniano was appointed to Columbus Children’s medical staff in 1985, served as medical staff president in 1997 and has served as the hospital’s surgeon in-chief (general pediatric surgery) since 1998. She is an alumna of Columbus Children’s, class of 1981, where she also served as Chief Resident from 1982 to 1983. In 1998, Caniano was presented with the Distinguished Educator Award from The Ohio State University College of Medicine where she’s held the position of professor of surgery and pediatrics since 1999. In 1999 she was presented with the H. William Clatworthy Jr. Professorship in Pediatric Surgery from Columbus Children’s Hospital and has been listed three consecutive years on America’s Best Doctors.

Paul J. Casamassimo, DDS, MS, General Pediatric Dentistry
Dr. Casamassimo was appointed to Columbus Children’s medical staff in 1988 and has served as the chief of pediatric dentistry since 1988. He was medical staff president in 1999 and was the president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) from 2001 to 2002. In 2003, Casamassimo was presented with the Humanitarian Award by the Ohio Dental Association. In 2006, he was awarded the Merle C. Hunter Award for Service by the AAPD, and this year was recognized with the Manuel Album Award for Care of the Disabled, also presented by AAPD.

Roger A. Friedman, MD, Pediatric Allergy & Immunology
Dr. Friedman was appointed to Columbus Children’s medical staff in 1983, served as medical staff president in 1998 and served as president of the Central Ohio Pediatrics Society from 1988 to 1989. He is an alumnus of Columbus Children’s Hospital, class of 1977, and currently serves as the Chairman for Children’s Medical Alumni Program. In 1987, Friedman was named Teacher of the Year from The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Department of Family Practice, and in both 1983 and 1989 was named as Pediatrician of the Year by Columbus Children’s Hospital. Dr. Friedman was listed on America’s Best Doctors in both 1998 and 2003.

Stephen J. Qualman, MD, Laboratory Medicine
Dr. Qualman was appointed to Columbus Children’s medical staff in 1985 and has served as pathologist in-chief for the Department of Laboratory Medicine since 1989. Dr. Qualman also served as the director of the Division of Pediatric Pathology in the Department of Pathology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine since 1990. In 2003, Qualman was presented with the Educator of the Year for Excellence in Continuing Education from Children’s Department of Laboratory Medicine, and the Richard M. and M. Elizabeth Ross Endowed Chair in Pediatric Research from Children’s Research Institute. This year, Qualman was recognized with a Top Contributors to the Advancement of Technology (TopCAT) award for Outstanding Technology, Bioinformatics Team awarded by Central Ohio Technology Community from over 300 nominations. After more than 20 impressive years in his field, Dr. Qualman will retire from Columbus Children’s and The Ohio State University, including his positions as: director of the Center for Childhood Cancer, principal investigator of the Biopathology Center, chief of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, as well as, vice chair of Pediatric Pathology at Ohio State.
