Music therapists use music and musical experiences to work on non-musical goals. Some of these goals could be:

• Encouraging emotional expression
• Improving fine and gross motor skills
• Reducing pain, anxiety, and stress
• Increasing ability to positively cope with hospitalization and healthcare experiences
• Improving communication
• Providing comfort
• Reinforcing academic skills
• Providing opportunities for positive interaction between patients and their families

About Our Staff
Music therapists are prepared at the bachelor's and master's levels in music therapy. They are nationally certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. The music therapist at Children's Hospital provides individual and group sessions for patients of all ages and their families.

Department Highlights

C.A.L.M.: Calming Anxieties through Listening to Music

The C.A.L.M. program is a partnership between Family & Volunteer Services and the Surgery departments. Listening to music during the surgical experience may provide comfort and offer distraction from anxiety and hospital noises. Patients undergoing surgery are encouraged to bring favorite CDs and a CD player with headphones from home or borrow them from the C.A.L.M. collection. The CD players will accompany the patient throughout the surgery experience, from Pre-op to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
