Hospital Named Certified Duchenne Care Center
Nationwide Children’s Hospital was named the first Certified Duchenne Care Center by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the leading advocacy organization working to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne). PPMD is launching the Certified Duchenne Care Center Program as part of its robust Transforming Duchenne Care Initiative.
Our Muscular Dystrophy Clinic is nationally recognized for leading research and clinical care for patients with any of the muscular dystrophy types. Supported in part by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), we provide the highest level of comprehensive care to patients from across the country.
In 2014, Nationwide Children’s was named the first Certified Duchenne Care Center by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) , the leading advocacy organization working to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The designation recognizes centers that maintain the highest standards in clinical and sub-specialty services, rapidly apply new evidence-based knowledge, and comply with standards in clinical care established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Nationwide Children’s is also an NIH-funded Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center , and part of the MDA’s Clinical Research Network for Duchenne muscular dystrophy .
Our multidisciplinary team is the foundation of our clinic. The combined expertise of specialists in neuromuscular disorders, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, and other disciplines coordinates patient care in a single clinic location. Specialized therapists in the clinic manage activities of daily living and assist patients with techniques to adapt to progressive symptoms.
While some testing and referrals to additional specialists may require additional scheduling, we provide all essential services in the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, limiting the need for multiple appointments. Conditions treated include:
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD)
Congenital muscular dystrophy
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD)
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD)
Myotonic muscular dystrophy
Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy
Distal muscular dystrophy
