Center for Injury Research and Policy National Student Injury Research Training Program :: Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio

National Student Injury Research Training Program

Each summer, the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) hosts the National Medical Student Injury Research Training Program. The goal of this program is to provide research training to future physician-investigators while introducing them to the field of injury research and prevention.

This program gives medical students the opportunity to conduct their own research under the supervision and guidance of CIRP faculty and researchers. In collaboration with a faculty mentor, each participant:

  • Chooses an injury topic
  • Conducts a literature review
  • Develops a research hypothesis
  • Analyzes data from an existing national dataset to evaluate the topic and test the hypothesis
  • Interprets and summarizes findings in a manuscript which he/she writes as first author
  • Submits the manuscript to a peer-reviewed scientific journal for publication

Through grants from the Child Injury Prevention Alliance and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, funding is available for two to four participants per year.

Training Period: Participation is full-time (40 hours/week) for 8 weeks from June 12, 2017 to August 4, 2017
Award: Selected participants will each receive a $3,000 stipend
Housing: Affordable housing is available near CIRP for visiting students

Program Success

Since 2005, more than 90 students have participated in research training during the summer at CIRP, each completing at least one scientific article based on their findings. CIRP faculty and staff take tremendous pride in the fact that several of our students have been honored with national awards for the research conducted during their training at CIRP. Many have presented their research at national professional meetings and have had their studies covered by major national and international media, such as the Today Show, Good Morning America, Time Magazine, The New York Times, USA Today, and international wire services.
