Surgery

When your child needs surgery, everything matters.

At Nationwide Children’s, our Department of Surgery provides comprehensive surgical care for infants, children and adolescents with congenital and acquired conditions, including major congenital anomalies, traumatic and thermal injuries, and tumors. An important part of our care involves ready access to laboratory, radiological and diagnostic services.

All outpatients are evaluated in a pediatric surgical clinic in our Outpatient Care Center on our main hospital campus, and at our surgery clinics scheduled at the Mansfield Close To Home Center, and the Ironton Close To Home Center (Urology clinic). We also feature our Westerville Surgery Center, a newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility where we also conduct outpatient evaluations, as well as outpatient surgical procedures.

Our surgeons are skilled in the use of advanced techniques and technology, including minimally invasive approaches. The Robot-Assisted Surgery program at Nationwide Children’s is just one example of our advanced approach to pediatric care.

In addition, we are one of only three Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers in Ohio. And of the three, we are the only one that is a verified Burn Center by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons.

Our pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). And, we have proudly earned the highest honor in nursing excellence with our Magnet™ designation.

We are recognized for quality patient care and innovations in nursing practice.  Plus, we are ranked as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” by U.S.News & World Report in all 10 pediatric specialties, including Cardiology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Urology.

The Department of Surgery includes the following surgical specialties:

  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery

  • Dentistry

  • Neurosurgery

  • Ophthalmology

  • Orthopedics

  • Otolaryngology (ENT)

  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

  • Urology

Stimulator Device Offers Treatment Option for Children with Incontinence

Incontinence is typically a condition associated with adults; however, many children also struggle with incontinence – bladder, bowel or both. In order to help these children, doctors at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have turned to a device, typically used in adult patients, to help manage children with chronic incontinence.

The sacral nerve stimulator is a surgically implanted device that helps regulate the bowel muscles and/or urethral (bladder) sphincter to control fecal and urine flow. Read the news release »

Minimally Invasive Surgery

  • Chest and lung conditions
  • Biliary and gastrointestinal disorders
