  • Swabs transported without the use of Viral Transport Media
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Not received within specified time frame

Comments

Viral culture is not recommended for CSF specimens. If viral culture for CSF is needed, please consult with the Clinical Microbiology and Immunology Laboratory Director, Dr. Amy Leber. Suspected HSV, VZV, and EV in CSF should include an order for detection by PCR.  Culture for mumps or measles is NOT performed.  Mumps and Measles cultures are send out tests to ARUP Laboratory.

Following may be isolated: Adenovirus, Cytomegalovirus, Enterovirus, Herpes simplex, Influenza A or B, Parainfluenza 1,2 or 3, Respiratory syncytial virus, Rhinovirus or Varicella-zoster
