Specimen Preparation

  • Avoid excessive light exposure. Protection is sufficient if kept in closed, dark container (refrigerator, transport bag). If this is not possible, and light exposure is expected to exceed 4 hours, please protect from light by wrapping in foil or other similar product.
  • Centrifuge within 4 hours, separate supernatant and refrigerate

Reasons for Rejection

  • Gross hemolysis
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Not received within specified time frame

Comments

Slight to moderate hemolysis will falsely increase result. Patient must be equal to or greater than 16 days of age. (For patients age 15 days or less, order Neonatal Bilirubin). If patient is receiving phototherapy, turn off lamp during collection process.
