Specimen Preparation

  • Fill tubes to appropriate mark.
  • Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Centrifuge, remove plasma/serum and freeze
  • Plasma must be platelet free

Reasons for Rejection

  • Not received within specified time frame
  • Clotted specimen
  • Gross hemolysis
  • Over or under filled tube
  • Wrong collection tube
  • Capillary specimen
  • Specimen collected in glass tube

Comments

Call the Coag Laboratory (614-722-5364) to add on Thrombin Time mixes with protamine sulfate and/or pooled normal plasma. Please indicate on the label the collection method, e.g. line draw with heparin, line draw without heparin, venipuncture. Also indicate if the patient is on heparin therapy. Centrifuge citrate tubes according to Lab policy, remove platelet-poor plasma, pool the plasma, aliquot and freeze. Send a minimum of two (2) aliquots of plasma.
