Specimen Preparation

  • Place specimen in formalin and transport to lab immediately after collection

Comments

Specimen size: At least one biopsy measuring 0.3 cm in diameter excised to a depth of 0.05 cm should be collected.

Specimen Transport:

  • Preferred Method Formalin-fixed specimens: Deliver to pathology within 1 hour of collection Call CPA for pick up: CPA can be reached via Vocera ‘CPA Lab’
  • Fresh specimen: Call CPA for a pickup.  Hand deliver to pathologist or designee within 15 minutes of collection

Other requirements: Specimen must be clearly labeled or designated as "Rectal Full Thickness Biopsy" with "Hirschsprung Evaluation" or "Rule out Hirschsprung" noted. Failure to communicate the need for Hirschsprung evaluation by incomplete labeling or incomplete clinical history may result in an indeterminate final diagnosis.If submitting Rectal Suction biopsy for Hirschprung Evaluation, please refer to test Rectal Suction Biopsy-Hirschsprung Evaluation.

*Saturday testing evaluation of specimens received after noon on Friday is available but must be coordinated with on-call pathologist in advance.

No specimen will be rejected. Submitting provider will be notified of potentially inadequate biopsies or labelling errors.
