Plastic Surgery Fellowship Benefits

Nationwide Children’s Hospital supports fellows with the resources they need to succeed in training and maintain a balanced lifestyle.   All fellows employed by Nationwide Children's receive the following benefits:

Competitive salary – Nationwide Children's offers salaries competitive with other hospitals in the region, including The Ohio State University Medical Center.  Fellows receive compensation based upon post-graduate year (see Housestaff Salary Scale).  Fellows with international residency experience or additional research training years should consult with the Program Director regarding their post graduate year equivalent.

Funding for relocation – Incoming fellows who are relocating from outside Columbus, may receive some funding for moving expenses.  Some relocation expenses may be taxed (dependant upon state and federal law).

Professional Conference funding – Fellows are encouraged to attend a professional conference each year.  Programs receive some funding each calendar year for fellows to attend and present at conferences.  Funds may be used toward conference fees, hotel, travel and meals.

Statistician support – The Nationwide Children's Research Institute Biostats Core has contracted with the OSU Center for Biostatistics for statistical services.  Statisticians are available to Nationwide Children's fellows requiring assistance with preliminary research design/grant preparation, preliminary research analysis, and statistical support of a research protocol

Lab coats, lab coat cleaning – Fellows receive 2 lab coats during fellowship training. Dry cleaning for lab coats is provided at no charge.

Paid fees – Fees related to Ohio Medical Licensure (FCVS, BCII check, Ohio Training Certificate and renewal or Ohio Medical License and renewal) are covered by the program.

ACLS/PALS/ATLS certification – Fellows requiring ACLS, PALS, and/or ATLS will have certification and/or recertification paid by program.

Paid time off – Fellows receive 15 days of paid vacation per academic year, 5 days of paid professional leave per academic year to attend a conference(s), 5 days of paid sick leave for each year of training program.

Maternity/Paternity Leave – Nationwide Children's provides maternity/paternity leave in keeping with the Family Medical Leave Act.   Eligible fellows may take up to 12 weeks off for the birth or adoption of a child.  Depending on program and certification requirements, fellows taking leave beyond their allotted vacation and/or paid sick time off (see Paid time off above) may be required to extend their training.  Fellows requiring leave should consult with their Program Director to determine if they will be required to extend their training.

Paid holidays – The hospital recognizes the following as paid holidays:  Jan 1, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Dec 25th.  Residents and fellows may be required to work some holidays, dependant on patient care responsibilities.  No additional compensation (e.g. paid time off or time and a half) is provided to residents and fellows working holidays.

Health insurance for self and family, including medical, dental, vision and prescription services are available from the first day of fellowship.  Nationwide Children's provides same sex partner benefits for eligible couples.  Contact Human Resources for additional information.

Medical flexible spending accounts (FSA) – All Nationwide Children's have the option to set up FSA pre tax payroll deductions for payment of care and/or dependent care expenses.

Malpractice and tail coverage for practice within the confines of the training program is provided by the hospital.

Pension Plan – Nationwide Children's offers a non-contributory defined contribution plan via TIAA-Cref.  All benefit eligible employees working at least 1,000 hours per year are automatically entered.  The hospital contributes 4% of annual salary to the pension plan for the first five vested service years.  

Tax Deferred Annuity program – Fellows have the option to contribute pre-tax dollars into a retirement savings plan through the Tax Deferred Annuity program.

Individual financial counseling from TIAA-Cref – TIAA-Cref has a local representative who is available to consult with individual employees at the main hospital.

Employee Tuition Reimbursement program – Fellows employed full time for 6 months or more are eligible to participate in the hospital’s Employee Tuition Reimbursement program.

Matrix Employee Assistance Program – Fellows have access to confidential counseling, legal and financial resources via Matrix.

Employee Wellness classes – Nationwide Children's promotes healthy work/life balance through the Employee Wellness program.  Healthy eating, Weight Watchers at Work, group fitness classes (toning, boxing, yoga, step aerobics, etc..), massage therapy, personal training and self defense are just some of the offerings.   Many of these classes are free.

Fitness Center – Nationwide Children's has an onsite Fitness Center open 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week with paid membership.

Child Care Center – Nationwide Children's operates a licensed day care for the children of employees.  Two centers accommodate infants through preschoolers.  Fees may be paid using payroll deduction.
