The New U Weekly Program in the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition is a 6-month Medical Weight Loss Program designed for children 11 years and older who struggle with being overweight. With the help of our team, you will learn and maintain lifestyle behavior changes to improve your physical and emotional health.
The program includes:
Clinic Visits: At the clinic visit, you will meet individually with the Pediatric Psychologist to set goals based on your progress in the program. There are 2 clinic visits in the Intensive Phase. During Maintenance, you may have three clinic visits with either the psychologist or the entire team.
Group Visits: During weekly evening group visits, you will have the opportunity to interact with other families in the program. Each group visit covers a lesson on healthy, nutritional lifestyle behaviors. You also have a chance to participate in fun physical activities during the visit. There are twelve evening group visits during the Intensive Phase, and at least four to six evening group visits in the Maintenance Phase. You will continue to work on your goals at home between visits by completing self-monitoring forms.
Our team is here for you every step of the way! You will meet with our staff at office visits and group visits, and you will be able to stay connected with us by telephone throughout the program.
The Physician or Nurse Practitioner will screen your child for medical causes of excess weight gain and evaluate for health conditions. They will also help you and your child work on your goals and behavior change.
The Pediatric Psychologist will meet with you during clinic visits to help you work on your goals and improve on different techniques for behavior change.
The Registered Dietitian will meet with you during the evening group sessions, and may meet with you at your clinic visits. The dietitian will teach you healthy, nutritional lifestyle behaviors and the skills to incorporate them into your everyday life.
Physical Therapists will see you at clinic visits and possibly meet with you individually. They will help you come up with creative ideas to increase physical activity through your recreation interests.
Certified Athletic Trainers will lead fun and safe physical activity during group visits. These activities will focus on strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular movement. They will also assess your level of fitness at the beginning and throughout the program.
At least one adult in the household must attend the program with the child. We also strongly recommend that all members of the household work together to make healthy changes. With support from family members, it will be easier to make lasting, healthy lifestyle changes. A staff member will review the code of conduct to ensure your commitment and enable success.
The group visits will be held in the evenings at the following locations:
Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center
584 County Line Road West
Westerville, OH 43082
Franklin Park Adventure Center
1747 E. Broad Street
Columbus, OH 43203
The cost of our program varies based on your insurance coverage. Please contact Nationwide Children’s Hospital Financial Department at (614) 722-2055 for more information about the cost, copayments, and insurance coverage.
Regular attendance is the key to success in the New U Weekly Program, but success is not limited to attendance. You will need to work with us to set and keep your nutrition, physical activity, and behavior change goals. Also, you will have to keep a weekly monitoring form and participate in all of the program activities.
We will support you every step of the way and help you create balance, motivation, and skills for lasting, healthy lifestyle changes.
Our team is here every step of the way! Patients meet with our staff at clinic visits and group sessions, and stay connected to us by telephone, e-mail or Internet throughout the program.
