Program Team
Our team is here every step of the way! Patients meet with our staff at clinic visits and group sessions, and stay connected to us by telephone, e-mail or Internet throughout the program.
The New U Junior Program in the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition is a 10-week Medical Lifestyle Behavior Change Program designed for children 5 to 10 years who struggle with their weight. With the help of our team, your child will be able to make lifestyle behavior changes.
The program includes:
The New U Jr. Program has two different kinds of visits.
Clinic Visits: At the clinic visit you will meet individually with the team – the Dietitian, Physical Therapist, and Physician or Nurse Practitioner – to identify risk factors and learn the SMART way to set goals. There are two clinic visits, one at the beginning and one at the end of the program.
Group Sessions: Following the first clinic visit, you and your child will attend 8 weekly group sessions in the evening. At these sessions, you will have the opportunity to interact with other families in the program. Each group session covers a different lesson on healthy, nutritional lifestyle behaviors and allows your child to participate in fun physical activity sessions.
Our team is here for you every step of the way! You will meet with our staff at clinic visits and group sessions, and you will be able to stay connected with us throughout the program.
The Dietitian will meet with you at both the clinic visit and at group sessions. They will help you learn healthy, nutritional lifestyle behaviors and the skills to incorporate them into your everyday life.
The Physical Therapist will see you at all the clinic visits and supervise the physical activity at the group evening sessions. They will provide you and your child with creative ideas to increase activity through your child’s recreational interests.
The Physician or Nurse Practitioner will screen your child for medical causes of excess weight gain and evaluate for health conditions such as hypertension and insulin resistance associated with excess weight gain. The physician/nurse practitioner will meet with you at both clinic visits. They will also help you and your child work on your goals and learn different techniques for behavior change.
At least one adult in the household must attend the New U Jr. Program with the child. We also strongly recommend that all members of the household work together and make healthy changes. With support from family members, it will be easier to make lasting healthy lifestyle changes.
