At Nationwide Children’s we know that preparing for residency training begins before medical school ends. We value diversity in our Pediatric Residency Training Program because we know diversity improves patient care and enhances our educational mission. That’s why we welcome medical students who are Underrepresented in Medicine (URM) from U.S. medical schools to apply for our subinternship.

As one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country, Nationwide Children’s treats more than 1.4 million patients from around the world each year. This includes:

  • The country’s largest ambulatory and neonatal networks
  • The highest volume surgical program in the country
  • Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
  • The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s, a top-10 NIH funded research institute
  • $1,000 stipend for travel and living expenses
  • Residency interview with Nationwide Children’s pediatric residency program
  • Housing provided by Nationwide Children’s
  • Four-week inpatient subinternship experience
    • Rotations are offered September through December
    • Choose from multiple subspecialties
  • Course credit from home institution via application through the AAMC supported VSAS/VSLO program
  • Inclusion in resident conferences and activities
  • Mentorship by residents, faculty and program leadership
  • Dedicated URM faculty serving as mentors
    • Additional meetings with faculty can be made available

  • Applicants must be in good standing at a U.S. accredited medical school and have completed all core clinical clerkships with passing grades by the start of the rotation.
  • Because the goal of the URM Pediatric Visiting Student Elective Scholarship Program is to reach underrepresented senior medical students from outside institutions, applicants who are not attending medical school at institutions affiliated with Nationwide Children’s are encouraged to apply.
  • Program focuses on fourth year medical students whose racial and ethnic backgrounds are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.
