Pediatric Surgery Fellowship
Established in 1950, the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital is regarded among the most prestigious and comprehensive pediatric surgical training programs in the United States.
The Department of Pediatric Surgery offers two training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME): a two-year fellowship in pediatric surgery and a one-year fellowship in pediatric surgical critical care.
In addition, there are one year fellowship programs in Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery, Pediatric Bariatric Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, and Surgical Quality Improvement.
The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Pediatric Surgery Fellowship program seeks candidates from a diverse background who are eager to pursue a career in pediatric surgery. The goal of the program is to provide the mentoring and training needed to develop expertise in the diagnostic, operative and perioperative care for children with congenital and acquired anomalies and diseases, be they developmental, inflammatory, neoplastic or traumatic. The scope of the training is broad, with a curriculum that encompasses surgical problems in utero, infancy, childhood, adolescence and young adulthood. The educational component prepares our trainees to function independently as board-certified subspecialists and provide them with skills necessary for delivery of surgical care in the tertiary setting, including team management, continuous performance improvement, application of new technology and participation in research. Upon completion, the fellow will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and an enthusiasm for life-long learning, teaching and practice of the pediatric surgery subspecialty. Candidates choose the NCH program due to the pediatric focus, high clinical volume and diverse faculty. The faculty have varied backgrounds and expertise and are at different stages in their careers.

Legacy
Established in 1950 by Dr. H. William Clatworthy, Jr., a world-renowned clinical pediatric surgeon and clinical educator, the fellowship is regarded as among the most prestigious and comprehensive pediatric surgical training programs in the United States. Graduates of the fellowship have been recognized as academic and clinical leaders in pediatric surgery. They include distinguished pediatric surgeons such as Dr. Eric Fonkalsrud, Dr. Jay Grosfeld, Dr. James O’Neill, Dr. Marc Rowe and Dr. Donna Caniano. The department has been recognized for excellence in its educational programs.
Program History
The Department of Pediatric Surgery is based at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. On June 20, 2012, Nationwide Children’s Hospital opened its doors to its new 12-story, 750,000-square foot facility, the result of an $800 million campus-expansion project. Nationwide Children's is the second largest children’s hospital in the country, with 551 licensed beds, and the most inpatient surgeries performed every year. In 2022, Nationwide Children’s Hospital once again made the Honor Roll of the U.S. News & World Report listing of the best Children’s Hospitals in the United States. In addition, Nationwide Children’s Hospital ranks among the top 10 pediatric research institutes in the country as measured by National institutes of Health funding, and has four research buildings dedicated to pediatric research on its campus. The pediatric surgery service is one of the busiest services of its kind across the United States.
The department sponsors a Level I pediatric trauma program verified by the American College of Surgeons and a pediatric burn program verified by the American Burn Association. In addition to providing general pediatric surgical care, the department provides world-leading expertise in multiple focused areas of excellence including pediatric burn care, trauma care, minimally invasive surgery, inflammatory bowel diseases, colorectal surgery, adolescent bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal motility disorders, chest wall deformities, surgical oncology, surgical endocrinology, and abdominal organ transplantation. In 2014, a new Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction (CCPR) was opened, the first center in the world to formally integrate all specialties involved in providing complete care of the colon and rectum in children.

Research education and training are vital to the mission of Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. As a top-ten free-standing pediatric research center and an academic affiliate of The Ohio State University, The Research Institute has an outstanding faculty, dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of scientists in pediatric research.

Advocacy
Advocacy training fosters and encourages interest in child advocacy by early involvement and exposure to its many aspects such as addressing social determinants of health, community collaboration, health finance, health policy and legislative advocacy.
Application and Selection
The fellowship participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the National Resident Matching Program. Candidates are invited for interviews based on their applications and the expected completion of an accredited fellowship in general surgery.
The deadline for applications is Dec. 31. Interviews are typically held in February and March.
