Specimen Preparation

  • Transport to laboratory as soon as possible
  • Raw stool must be placed into appropriate transport media within 2 hours of collection

Reasons for Rejection

  • Stool received in Ecofix preservative
  • Stool received in PVA preservative only
  • Stool in diaper
  • Stool containing barium
  • Stool received on swabs

Comments

Antigen detection is recommended over O&P examination for detection of Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
