Specimen Preparation

  • Transport to laboratory as soon as possible
  • Raw stool must be placed into Cary-Blair media within 2 hours of collection

Reasons for Rejection

  • Stool received in O&P kit
  • Stool in diaper
  • Not received within specified time frame
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Frozen specimen

Comments

This culture test is designed to detect Shigella species only in patients who were previously positive for Shigella. If other bacterial pathogens of gastroenteritis are suspected, please order a routine stool culture. “Some local health departments provide this testing free of charge. NCH will bill for this testing. Recommend inquiry with public health if applicable”
