Specimen Preparation

  • Do not centrifuge
  • Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Transport to the lab immediately after collection
  • Fill tubes to appropriate mark.
  • Keep at room temperature

Specimen Preparation

  • Fill tubes to appropriate mark.
  • Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Centrifuge, remove plasma/serum and freeze
  • Plasma must be platelet free

Reasons for Rejection

  • Clotted specimen
  • Not received within specified time frame
  • Over or under filled tube
  • Gross hemolysis
  • Wrong collection tube
  • Capillary specimen
  • Specimen collected in glass tube

Comments

Plasma samples will be rejected if any of the following interfering substances are present: Unconjugated Bilirubin (greater than 20 mg/dL), Hemoglobin (greater than 500 mg/dL), Unfractionated Heparin (greater than 2 IU/mL), or Low Molecular Weight Heparin (greater than 2 anti-Xa IU/mL). Please indicate on the label the collection method, i.e. line draw with heparin, line draw without heparin, venipuncture. Centrifuge citrate tubes according to Lab policy, remove platelet-poor plasma, pool the plasma, aliquot and freeze. Send a minimum of two (2) aliquots of plasma.
