Specimen Preparation
- Do not centrifuge
- Fill tubes to appropriate mark.
- Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
- Transport to laboratory as soon as possible
- Keep at room temperature
Reasons for Rejection
- Clotted specimen
- Not received within specified time frame
- Refrigerated specimen
- Centrifuged specimen
- Not received at proper temperature
- Wrong collection tube
- Specimen collected in glass tube
Comments
Patients with thrombocyotopenia may not yield enough platelets for testing. Recent platelet transfusion will affect results. A Pathologist consult (billed from Pediatric Pathology Associates (PPAC)) will be ordered and charged to the patient if abnormal results are obtained.
