Specimen Preparation

  • Do not centrifuge
  • Fill tubes to appropriate mark.
  • Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Transport to laboratory as soon as possible
  • Keep at room temperature

  • Clotted specimen
  • Not received within specified time frame
  • Refrigerated specimen
  • Centrifuged specimen
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Wrong collection tube
  • Specimen collected in glass tube

Comments

This test is only performed Monday - Friday.

Specimens must be RECEIVED in the lab by 1pm Friday for testing to be performed.

Test is not setup on Saturdays, Sundays, or national holidays.(Specimens can be collected on Sunday after 12:00 p.m.(noon) unless Monday is a national holiday). If national holiday falls in the middle of the week samples must be delivered by 1pm the day before.

Inpatient- Do not collect between 1pm Friday and noon Sunday due to stability of sample.

Outpatient- Do not collect unless your courier will deliver to Main Laboratory by 1pm Friday. Do not collect on Saturday. Samples may be collected on Sunday after noon.(Unless Monday is a national holiday)

Patients with thrombocyotopenia may not yield enough platelets for testing. Recent platelet transfusion will affect results. A Pathologist consult (billed from Pediatric Pathology Associates (PPAC)) will be ordered and charged to the patient if abnormal results are obtained.
