Specimen Preparation

  • Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Do not use pneumatic tube system to transport
  • Specimen cannot be collected without having been scheduled by Hematology Clinic

Reasons for Rejection

  • Platelet count less than specified.
  • Clotted specimen
  • Refrigerated specimen
  • Failure to schedule 24 hours in advance
  • Specimen handling other than described

Comments

**Test must be scheduled in advance with the NCH Central Scheduling by calling 614-722-6200.**

Specimen must be drawn at NCH Main Campus (Outpatient Laboratory) in either 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., or 1:30 p.m. time slot as previously scheduled by Hematology Clinic. A total of 21 mL of whole blood (4 Blue, 1 Royal Blue, 1 Purple) is required for this test. Specimen must be obtained via venipuncture and must be transported by Lab personnel or NCH Transportation personnel (cannot be placed in the pneumatic tube system)

Patient must be medication-free for 2 weeks prior to test, including over-the-counter drugs (e.g. aspirin). Patient's whole blood platelet count must be >112,500/cu mm (add-on complete blood count (CBC, CPT 85027) and clot retraction may be ordered by interpreting pathologist). A pathologist's interpretation, billed from Pediatric Pathology Associates (PPAC), will be ordered and charged.

Prior to collection on an inpatient, consultation and approval by Hematology medical staff is required as well as coordination with Clinical Laboratory to insure proper handling. Testing includes ATP release.
