Specimen Preparation

  • Centrifuge within 4 hours, separate supernatant and refrigerate

Reasons for Rejection

  • Gross hemolysis
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Not received within specified time frame

Comments

Collect sample from patient fasting at least 12 hours. Non-Fasting patients will have elevated Triglycerides, which will cause falsely elevated VLDL and falsely lowered LDL results. Specimens with Triglyceride greater than 400mg/dL cannot have their VLDL and LDL calculated. Be sure puncture site is clean and free from soap residue. Glycerol found in hand creams and soap may result in falsely elevated results.
