Comments

Quantitative adenovirus PCR should only be ordered on patients with recent known adenovirus infection to monitor disease progression and therapy. Due to the ADVQT test?s lower limits of sensitivity it should not be used as a diagnostic test.

When orders for ADVQT are received without evidence of recent infection the lab will first perform the qualitative ADVBLD test.

  • If the qualitative test is positive the ADVQT will be performed;
  • If the qualitative test is negative the order will be changed to ADVBLD and answered as NEG (negative/not detected) and ADVQT will be answered as TNP (Test Not Performed) and credited.

Whole blood specimens should be refrigerated.

If whole blood specimen cannot reach lab within 16 hours, separate plasma and send.

DO NOT thaw plasma to transport.

If the volume of whole blood is insufficient to separate plasma the test may be performed using 100 ?L of whole blood.

Do not freeze whole blood.

Note that a single 3 mL Purple top tube will yield plasma sufficient for testing all of the following: Adenovirus, BK virus, CMV and HHV-6.

If EBV is also requested a 200 ?L aliquot of whole blood must be removed prior to separating plasma.
