Specimen Preparation

  • Transport to laboratory as soon as possible
  • Raw stool must be placed into Cary-Blair media within 2 hours of collection

Reasons for Rejection

  • Stool received in O&P kit
  • Stool in diaper
  • Not received within specified time frame
  • Not received at proper temperature

Comments

  • E. coli Shiga toxin testing performed and billed with all stool culture orders.
  • Test can be ordered without a stool culture if a patient has had a previously positive stool culture for Shiga toxin producing E. coli.
  • This test detects Shiga toxin produced by all E. coli serotypes, including E.coli 0157:H7.
