Reasons for Rejection

  • Stool received in O&P kit
  • Stool in diaper
  • Not received within specified time frame
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Frozen specimen
  • Collected in diaper or cotton balls
  • Not submitted in proper transport media
  • Stool received in Ecofix preservative
  • Unpreserved stool received outside of specified time frame


Routine stool includes screen for Aeromonas only. Preliminary results available at 48 hours. This culture will include susceptibilities if Aeromonas is recovered. Two(2) stool specimens collected on separate days is recommended to increase the detection of bacterial agents of community-acquired gastroenteritis. If other pathogens of gastroenteritis are suspected, please order a Gastrointestinal (GI) pathogen FilmArray panel. Patients with persistent diarrhea but negative stool cultures, contact the Clinical Microbiology lab, 614-722-5370, for additional recommendations.
