Comments

Culture is NOT for CSF; for CSF order CSFC. Direct Gram stain smear included. Pericardial fluid, pleural fluid, or synovial fluid specimens with volume greater than 1 mL will reflex order Body Fluid in BC Medium (BFBC, CPT 87070). Specimens received in tubes with anti-coagulants (EDTA, citrate, heparin) will be cultured but culture sensitivity may be reduced. Such specimens will be reported with the following comment: This specimen was received in a tube containing anticoagulant. The effect of anticoagulants on the stability and viability of bacteria has not been thoroughly studied. Please submit such specimens for culture in sterile containers such as a red top (serum) tube. If the specimen is likely to clot, a portion of or the entire specimen may be submitted in a Pediatric Isolator tube. If an Isolator tube is not available, use a sterile lithium or sodium heparin tube as a best alternative.
