Specimen Preparation

  • Centrifuge within 2 hours, remove plasma/serum then transfer to a Laboratory Services provided Trace Element-Free Transport Tube. Label with either SERUM or PLASMA according to tube type. Freeze specimen. Send both aliquotted sample and original tube in same baggie.

Reasons for Rejection

  • Capillary specimen
  • Wrong collection tube
  • Moderate to grossly hemolyzed


Specimen must be venipuncture, in Royal Blue Top tube (plain or EDTA), to avoid potential contamination. Mild hemolysis is acceptable, moderate to gross hemolysis is cause for rejection. Testing is performed on Mondays and Thursdays, with holiday exceptions. Samples must be received in testing lab by 1300 on days when testing is performed. After 1300 receive time, specimen will be analyzed on next scheduled testing day. Testing is not performed on national holidays. Contact Central Distribution for royal blue top tubes as needed.
