Specimen Preparation

  • Refrigerate during collection
  • Transport to laboratory as soon as possible

Reasons for Rejection

  • Room temperature receipt
  • Wrong type of specimen
  • Random urine sample

Comments

Patient Preparation: Discontinue drugs that release or hinder metabolism of epinephrine, norepinephrine, or dopamine for at least 1 week before obtaining the specimen .If this is not possible for medical reasons, contact the laboratory to discuss whether a shorter drug-withdrawal period may be acceptable.

Collect urine for 24 hours.  At beginning of collection have patient void and discard this urine. Begin timing collection at this point and collect all urine until the end of the collection period. Have patient void and save urine at the final collection period.

Must collect a 24-Hour urine sample.  Random samples are not acceptable.
