Specimen Preparation

  • Mix EDTA tube by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Transport to laboratory as soon as possible
  • If delay in transport greater than 1 hour, refrigerate

Reasons for Rejection

  • Collected in tube with gel separator
  • Wrong collection tube
  • Not received at proper temperature
  • Not received within specified time frame


The laboratory must be notified at the time this test is ordered by calling 614-722-5407 during first shift or 614-722-5373 during second or third shift to notify the technologist that a stat test for HIV is ordered. All positive STAT screens will be sent to a reference lab for confirmation testing by an antibody differentiation assay, at additional charge. Result will be called to practitioner within 1hr of specimen receipt in lab. Reactive RPRs will be titered and sent to reference laboratory for Treponema pallidum Ab by TP-PA for confirmation.
