Specimen Preparation

  • Do not centrifuge
  • Transport to the lab immediately after collection
  • Mix by gentle inversion immediately after collection
  • Keep refrigerated

Reasons for Rejection

  • Collected in tube with gel separator
  • Over or under filled tube
  • Clotted specimen
  • Not received within specified time frame

Comments

EDTA (purple top) is the preferred anticoagulant. A pathologist's consult (billed from Pediatric Pathology Associates (PPAC)) may be ordered and charged if indicated. A CBC and peripheral smear should be submitted. A CBC (CPT 85027) may be ordered and charged if not submitted with the BCB order.
