Comments

Typical indication for CSF amino acids is for the assessment of glycine encephalopathy (non ketotic hyperglycinemia)(NKH). For proper assessment, a concurrent (as close as possible but must be within 4 hours) serum sample should be collected and a serum amino acid profile (QAAS) ordered in addition to the CSF to determine the CSF to serum glycine ratio. Keep separate from collections for other spinal fluid tests. When ordered as a follow-up to an abnormal newborn screening test, please submit a copy of the state newborn screening results with the specimen. If patient is on TPN therapy, please consult Genetics Services for proper collection procedure.
