Comments

Direct AFB smear of CSF not routinely performed. Consult Microbiology (614-722-5370) . Other specimens will receive direct AFB smear.

Specimens received on swabs are not the ideal samples for mycobacterial cultures and there is generally insufficient clinical material for optimal diagnostic yield. Mycobacterial cells are hydrophobic and do not absorb well to fibers on swabs. Tissue or fluid specimens provide better quality and more adequate material for recovery of acid fast bacilli.
