Researchers Develop Model of FSHD, Identify Potential Therapy

A new mouse model of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) reflects many disease characteristics and appears to be useful for testing therapeutics. DUX4, the protein responsible for the disease, is so potent that making a model has been challenging. The lab of Scott Harper, PhD, a principal investigator in the Center for Gene Therapy, reports their model produces controllable amounts of DUX4 when the mouse is fed the drug tamoxifen. In tests, the model built muscle mass and strength when treated with the gene AAV1.Follistatin. The findings are published in JCI Insight.
