Ohio Injuries: Overall Injuries

Every day in Ohio, there are approximately 4,272 emergency department visits, 357 hospitalizations, and 18 deaths resulting from injuries. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for Ohioans 1-44 years of age and the fifth leading cause of death to Ohioans of all ages. Increased efforts to prevent injuries are necessary as the number of injuries continues to rise. The following data come from the Injury in Ohio report.*

Health Care Resource Utilization

  • From 2005 through 2007, injuries to Ohioans resulted in an annual average of:
    • 1,559,614 Emergency Department Visits
    • 305,806 EMS Runs
    • 130,491 Inpatient Hospitalizations
    • 6,704 Fatalities

  • The number of emergency department visits increased 7.9% from 2005 to 2007
  • On average, there is an injury-related emergency department visit in Ohio every 20 seconds
  • Emergency department visits made by each age group in Ohio for 2005-2007 accounted for the following:

  • Adults ages 25-64 years accounted for almost half (48.8%) of injury-related emergency department visits, while young adults ages 15-24 years accounted for another 20.4%

Injury-Related Hospitalizations

  • Injury-related hospitalizations in 2005-2007 resulted in an annual average of:
    • $3.3 billion in hospital charges
    • 687,184 days of hospitalization

  • Older adults ages 65 years or older accounted for almost half (46.8%) of inpatient hospitalizations


  • The leading causes of death due to injury for all Ohioans were:

  • 69.5% of fatal injuries in Ohio were unintentional, while 29.0% were the result of homicide or suicide

Mechanisms of Injury

  • Falls were the leading overall mechanism of injury in Ohio, accounting for the greatest number of injury-related emergency department visits and inpatient hospitalizations
