Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine's subspecialty-trained pediatric anesthesiologists provide pediatric anesthesiology services for patients undergoing surgical procedures, consultations in respiratory care, hemodynamic monitoring and acute post-operative pain therapy.

The department features a progressive environment for academic anesthesiology. In addition to providing general anesthesia care for the entire spectrum of pediatric surgical procedures, the department also offers spinal anesthesia, procedural sedation, acute and chronic pain management, palliative care, extensive education and training and a highly productive research program.

All department faculty members are fellowship trained in pediatric anesthesiology and board certified in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology. Many also hold additional subspecialty training and board certification in fields such as pain medicine, critical care, pediatrics and palliative care. Department staff includes advanced practice nurses and certified registered nurse anesthetists with specific training and experience providing infant and child care.

Supporting anesthesia care for more than 30,000 patients each year the department also provides services throughout the central Ohio region.

About Us

Nationwide Children's Hospital Outpatient Surgery and Nationwide Children's Hospital Surgery Center provide outpatient, same-day surgery for patients, from birth through age 21. These child-friendly facilities are both designed to reduce the worry and stress of surgery for patients and their families.

  • Nationwide Children's Hospital Outpatient Surgery is located in the main hospital, with surgery and recovery occurring within the Main Operating Room at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
  • Nationwide Children's Hospital Surgery Center, a freestanding outpatient surgery facility, is right next door on the campus of Nationwide Children's Hospital. If surgery is scheduled for Nationwide Children's Hospital Surgery Center, preoperative registration, surgery and postoperative recovery all take place in the Surgery Center.

Anesthesia is provided by pediatric anesthesiologists who have extensive training in the care of young patients - their expertise is one of our greatest assets. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and other clinical staff are also specially trained and dedicated to the special needs of children.

When your child is having a procedure that requires general anesthesia or sedation, it's important to follow these instructions.

What Is a Pediatric Anesthesiologist? Explaining Sedation To Your Kids.

Education and Training

Education is an essential component of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine's mission. Pediatric anesthesia experience is provided to anesthesiology residents from The Ohio State University and OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, as well as to student nurse anesthetists from programs in Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

The department has an active fellowship program offering a one-year ACGME-approved curriculum for training in pediatric anesthesiology following completion of the standard four-year residency in anesthesiology. Training also is provided for two to three international fellows each year. The limited number of fellowship positions ensures intensive training with complex cases in addition to more common pediatric anesthesia procedures.

Additional subspecialty training is offered in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, pediatric regional anesthesia and acute pain management, quality improvement and research.
