Background Check and Drug Screen
Our patients’ health and safety is in our hands. Upon hire, all new employees at Nationwide Children’s must complete and pass a background check and drug screen. The background check will include reference checking and a criminal background search complete with finger printing. Nationwide Children's follows the Ohio Revised Code to determine whether a felony or misdemeanor conviction or guilty plea is a disqualifying offense for applicants to the Internship in Professional Psychology. For applicants to the Internship in Professional Psychology, Nationwide Children's Hospital primarily relies on the background check requirements found in Ohio Revised Code Sections 3701.881, 2151.86, and 109.572 and Ohio Administrative Code Section 5101:2-5-09.
All job candidates are required to successfully complete a drug screen as a condition of employment. NCH is a drug-free workplace, and our 9-panel drug screen tests for:
- Amphetamine/Methamphetamine
- Barbiturates
- Benzodiazepines
- Cannabinoids (including medicinal marijuana)
- Cocaine
- Methadone
- Oxycodone
- Opiates
Applying to Multiple Tracks
We strongly encourage applicants to talk with their academic advisors and supervisors and to reflect carefully upon their own training experiences prior to selecting a track. On each track’s page we have listed factors that reviewers often look favorably upon. We hope that this information will help applicants select the track that is the best match for them.
Based on past years’ applicant data and our own experiences in reviewing applications, few applicants are a good match for more than one track. On average, less than one percent apply to more than one track, and even fewer are invited to interview for more than one track.
Selection for Interview
Interviews are by invitation only.
We believe that a personal interview is extremely helpful to both the applicant and faculty in assessing the fit of our internship with an applicant’s training needs and professional goals. Based on survey information reviewed from APPIC as well as our commitment to fostering an atmosphere of equity, all interviews during the 2023-2024 interview season will be held virtually and there will be NO in-person interviews, even for local candidates.
The application review and interview process is handled separately by each training track. After the November 1, 2023 application deadline, each application will be reviewed by at least three faculty members. After the application reviews are completed, faculty members from each track meet to decide which applicants to invite for an interview. Those applicants selected for interview are then contacted by the coordinator for the respective track and invited for a 1-day interview. Applicants invited to interview will be contacted no later than November 27, 2023.
Interview Dates
Each track interviews on different dates, and at different Nationwide Children's Hospital locations. Therefore, it is not possible to have interviews for two different tracks on the same day. Interview dates for the 2024-2025 academic year are as follows (all virtual):
