Percutaneous Cecostomy

Nationwide Children's Hospital is unique in its approach to treating children with retentive fecal incontinence by the placement of minimally invasive percutaneous cecostomy tube as an access for delivering antegrade colonic lavage to the cecum.

Unlike a traditional cecostomy, which requires surgery, the percutaneous cecostomy is a minimally invasive procedure, performed by an interventional radiologist, using X-ray and ultrasound imaging as a guide. Patients tolerate this percutaneous approach much better; they experience less pain, recover faster and face fewer risks and complications.

The care provided by the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's is also unique because of the specialized care the program provides for cecostomy patients before, during and after the procedure is performed.
