Pediatric cancer research receives just 4% of the federally-funded annual budget from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Much of this is do the high cure rate of pediatric cancers when compared to cancers in other populations. While the cure rate for pediatric cancer may be comparatively high, the childhood cancer community still relies on support beyond this 4% to provide the necessary research and clinical trials for patients with the rarest cancer diagnoses.
The Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital takes the responsibility of effective use of resources very seriously and is making permanent, lasting progress in the fight against pediatric cancer on a global scale. Our dedicated, impassioned staff is proactively collaborating with other pediatric institutions around the world, and today there are more answers than ever before thanks to a generation of research and clinical trials.

Timothy P. Cripe, MD, is Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology & BMT at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Randal S. Olshefski
Randal S. Olshefski, MD, is a Hematology & Oncology physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Nationwide Children's Hematology/Oncology/BMT is committed to advancing both basic and clinical research. The division maintains active membership in the Children’s Oncology Group and the Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplant Consortium, and is a research member of the International Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry. The division is also involved in other clinical research efforts aimed at improving bone marrow transplant outcomes. Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant works hand-in-hand with the Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases to expand the understanding of childhood cancer and to improve strategies for its diagnosis and treatment.

Meet Lauren
At the end of 2016, Lauren was diagnosed with a Medulloblastoma tumor on her brain stem. Shortly after Lauren’s diagnosis, she had to endure brain surgery.
