Recently, Wolfe Associates, Inc. donated $2 million to Nationwide Children’s Hospital establishing two fellowships – The Wolfe Associates, Inc. Fellowship in Pediatric Oncology and The Wolfe Associates, Inc. Fellowship in Advanced Cardiac Noninvasive Imaging (Echocardiography). These newly-named fellowships will support the recruitment of the best and brightest in the medical field to Nationwide Children’s.
“Wolfe Associates, Inc. has a longstanding history with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and their continued commitment and support, has helped the hospital become one of the leading pediatric health care facilities in the country and around the world,” said Steve Allen, MD, chief executive officer of Nationwide Children’s. “Through their generous support, the establishment of these fellowships will add an elite group of highly-specialized physicians to our already world-renowned staff. Robust and diverse fellowship programs substantially enhance our hospital’s reputation as a leader in training the next generation of physician clinical and scientific experts.”
Young physicians who participate in medical fellowships are among the most promising; having already completed as much as 16 years of education and training. At numerous steps along the way, these men and women have conducted research, performed complex procedures and spent many nights worrying about their patients. Yet, they still yearn to learn more.
Their desire to learn comes with a huge financial burden. The average medical fellow has more than $160,000 in student loan debt. Starting a “real job” rather than continuing to be a trainee makes far greater economic sense. But they are driven by a higher purpose to develop, test and incorporate the latest advances in care for the sickest and most vulnerable patients.
These new Fellowships at Nationwide Children’s will help fill those gaps, providing unparalleled learning and mentoring opportunities, to ensure that the future generations of children receive the high quality of care they deserve.
The Wolfe Associates, Inc. Fellowship in Pediatric Oncology
Dramatic improvements in the care and outcomes for children with oncological and/or hematological disorders have been achieved, including more than 90 percent cure rates for some leukemias and bone marrow transplant treatment for sickle cell. Moreover, research has led to discoveries of new, less toxic treatments. Enhanced knowledge of the human genome is paving the way for new frontiers in screening and prevention as well as treatment customized for the specific cancer of each patient.
Nationwide Children’s has attracted some of the leading clinical/translational scientists in the world, thereby providing a rich clinical and academic environment for fellows to launch their careers.
The Wolfe Associates, Inc. Fellowship in Advanced Cardiac Noninvasive Imaging (Echocardiography)
From the tiniest newborn to the adult with congenital heart disease, echocardiologists provide surgeons, interventional cardiologists and intensivists with detailed diagnostic and treatment information that was almost unimaginable just five years ago. Use of this technology can lead to fewer and/or less invasive procedures and can significantly reduce radiation exposure.
During their training at Nationwide Children’s, advanced cardiac noninvasive imaging fellows perform state-of-the art procedures, participate in research, engage in ongoing quality improvement and learn how to develop and implement their own programs.
