Legendary Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes taught those he coached to “pay forward.” Student-athletes at OSU have since continued that tradition off the field and in their communities. Matt Wilhelm, former linebacker on the Ohio State football team (1999-2002) and current linebacker for the National Football League San Diego Chargers, is doing just that by accepting honorary chairmanship of the 32nd Annual Woody Hayes Celebrity Golf Classic.
The annual golf event, slated for Monday, June 23, will be held at two different golf course locations this year – the New Albany Country Club and Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City. The event is organized by the Development Board of Nationwide Children’s Hospital and raises money to further pediatric cancer research in central Ohio. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Center for Childhood Cancer at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s.
A worldwide resource, the Center for Childhood Cancer features the country’s largest federally-funded pediatric tumor bank, with tissue samples of more than 22,000 American and Canadian children with cancer. It provides specimens for cancer research to institutions across the globe, and provides a second-opinion service for diagnosis and confirmation of pediatric cancer cases from all of North America.
There are various opportunities to participate in the 2008 Woody Hayes Celebrity Golf Classic. The two most popular options are as follows: Scarlet Teams – $3,000 team registration – will consist of four players and Gray Teams – $1,500 team registration – will include two players. Foursomes will be paired with a local media or sports celebrity. Additional sponsorship opportunities are available beginning at the $4,000 level.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. June 23 at both golf course locations – New Albany Country Club and Pinnacle. The driving ranges will open at that time to participants for practice. The shot-gun start will begin promptly at 10 a.m.
All golfers receive lunch, dinner, drinks and a registration gift package. Two tickets will be given to each golfer for the Kick-Off Party held Sunday, June 22 at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café. The Kick-Off Party includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent and live auction.
