ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Determination Way is an area in the Clinical Therapies gym at Nationwide Children’s Hospital that provides simulated real life experiences for our patients. The ‘ice cream parlor’ is a simulated area where patients can practice many important life skills that are compromised as a result of their injury or illness. These skills include, ordering and paying for food, using money appropriately, counting money, using good manners, getting in/out of a restaurant booth, opening food wrapping/packaging, using proper hygiene around food, practicing job skills and operating a cash register. Once practiced in this type of simulated environment, the transition is much improved. Not only are these important skills developed, but the patients feel rewarded at the end of the session when they get to enjoy a DQ treat.
Dairy Queen donated numerous items including the supplies, an electronic register and even ice cream cake decorating lessons to the Clinical Therapies Gym at Nationwide Children’s.
