Becoming a psychologist was something I had planned to do for a long time. I’ve been here for 20 years and actually started out as a psychology intern. The diagnosis of cancer creates an instant crisis. It is a life-changing event for the entire family and community. The psychosocial services we provide here ensure not only that a patient’s physical health is a focus, but the social and emotional health of the child and family are, too. We help them cope with some of the problems that may come up during the care journey. At the end of it all, the best part of my job is knowing that I am a part of helping families cope with a sometimes devastating illness. The outcomes may not always be what we hope for, but if we can guide and support families regardless, that makes me proud of the work we do here.”

The number of genetic counselors has expanded, so it’s been an incredible evolution of all the resources. The employees have almost doubled since I’ve been here. I never really dreamed that this place would have a genomics institute as well, so that’s been really cool to do it in-house.“

They’re very serious diagnoses and you need to be able to treat the whole family. The one word to describe it is a partnership. The families are not alone. I think every day is really sort of a defining day. Children are very resilient even when they are very ill. You learn a lot from them and it’s very inspiring for me to be around every day. It’s always nice to get photos from people who are in college, photos of patients you’ve taken care of who now have children. To kind of be a part of their family.”

I didn’t have a music therapist myself, but I used music for myself a lot. Music was the only thing that would help manage my pain sometimes, or help me cope with my own illness. I had a couple relapses along the way. So I really had a personal connection with music when I was a patient. When I found out about music therapy as a career, it felt like I was called to do it. I pursued that and I was l lucky enough to get hired here. It’s come full circle for me. I really love the opportunity to give back and serve the patients here. Music touches people in so many deep and personal ways. For me, it’s a gift to be able to make those connections and provide those opportunities.”
