Updates from Research Information Technology

(From the December 2013 issue of Research Now)

Adobe® has changed their licensing scheme to a cloud-based product, the Creative Cloud™, which is available for teams through subscription-based licensing, rather than the previous perpetual licensing. Subscriptions are purchased on an annual basis, with the termination date in March of each year, and are pro-rated by month at the time of purchase.

What applications are included in Creative Cloud for teams?

  • Photoshop CC
  • Illustrator CC
  • InDesign CC
  • Acrobat Professional
  • Dreamweaver CC
  • After Effects CC
  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC
  • Adobe Muse CC
  • And others: Adobe Audition, Bridge, Encore, Fireworks, Flash Builder Premium, Flash Professional, InCopy, Lightroom, Media Encoder, Prelude, and SpeedGrade

Is it possible to purchase just single application subscriptions?

Yes. The following applications are available for purchase as single app subscriptions: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Muse, Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Edge Inspect, Edge Animate, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Adobe Audition, SpeedGrade, InCopy, and Prelude.

Will internet access be needed to use the Creative Cloud applications?

No, the applications will be installed directly to your computer. Subscriptions are managed through an administrative portal by RIT.  Although available, cloud storage will be disabled. Files will be stored on the network (preferred) or hard drive (if off-site).

What is the difference between the perpetual licenses and the subscription licenses?

  • Perpetual licenses are installed and managed per workstation; subscription licenses are installed and managed per user
  • A subscription was purchased for an employee that left; what happens to the subscription?
It can be reassigned to another employee.
  • Can one subscription be purchased and shared among lab members?
    No.
  • Cost: In the long run, one could say that perpetual licenses are cheaper because you don’t have to upgrade. However, Adobe is no longer offering the “upgrade plan” with their perpetual licenses, so a new purchase is necessary every time an upgrade is desired. With subscription licensing, the current software version is always available. Adobe upgrades their most-used applications on an annual basis. Subscription pricing is easier to budget on an annual basis.

I have a desktop and a laptop computer; can the software be installed on both computers?

The Creative Cloud applications can be installed on two computers, regardless of the operating system, for the subscribed individual.

My lab/investigator/department currently owns a perpetual license of Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.; do I have to move to the Adobe Creative Cloud?

No. At this time, you may continue using the perpetual license until it no longer works on the operating system.

I don’t use these Adobe products on a regular basis but may need them once or twice a year. What’s available for me?

RIT is purchasing a number of licenses that will be available for check-out on a monthly basis. Users will not be permitted to check these licenses out on an on-going basis. If users have a continuous need for these products, they must purchase a yearly subscription.
