New Fish Tank Makes Television Debut

(From the September issue of Inside Nationwide Children's)

It took ten employees from the Engineering Services Department and several on-site construction workers a little more than ten minutes to move a 2,300 pound fish tank to its new home. All while television camera crews were rolling. “It was cool to get a behind-the-scenes look at the new fish tank,” says Jerry Powell, a construction coordinator in the Engineering Services Department who helped move the new tank. “I think the fish tank will help give patients something to look forward to while they’re here.”

Thanks to a generous donation from Nationwide Insurance, an amazing new waterfall tank was installed in “The Pond”by the crew from the Animal Planet TV show “Tanked.” This popular series follows two brothers-in-law, Brett and Wayde, as they build extreme fish tanks across America. After taking a tour of the hospital, Brett and Wayde shared that they weren’t just impressed by our hospital space, but also by the Nationwide Children’s employees. “We were in the cafeteria yesterday – it was exciting, the people here are excited to be here, they’re excited to work here,” explains Wayde.

For patients and families who travel here from around the corner, across the country or around the world, we know that creating an environment with positive distractions is an important part of the healing process. The new 420-gallon fish tankfits in perfectly with the nature theme found throughout the rest of campus andwill provides a calming space for our patients, their families and our employees.

What’s The Pond?
The Pond, the name for the new area currently under construction on the first floor, is located on the Blue Path, just past the Education Building. And when construction is complete, new stairs, similar to those in the new main hospital, will lead to the food court where you’ll find Subway, KoKo’s and the Nationwide Children’s Bistro. The Pond will also be home to the new Gift Shop at the Pond, which will replace the Cubby Hole. “The new Gift Shop will offer more products including toys, health and beauty supplies, logo wear and gifts – including seasonal merchandise. And the opened and inviting space will allow a more pleasant shopping experience,” says Gift Shop Manager Cathy Ray.
