Lab Safety Reviews: Research Safety Findings from 2014

(From the March 2015 Issue of Research Now)

Research Safety completed the second round of Lab Safety Reviews in early January. We are happy to report from June to January we saw a 27% drop in overall findings and a 41% decrease in serious safety findings. Thank you to all of our Lab Safety Designees who work so hard to maintain safe work environments!

Most Common Serious Safety Findings:

  1. Eyewashes in Labs not Flushed
  2. Improper Chemical Storage
  3. Lack of Cryogenic PPE
  4. Emergency Equipment Blocked

In 2014, sharps related injuries were reduced by half at The Research Institute, but it is still the most common injury to employees at the Research Institute. In 2015, Research Safety will be launching safety initiatives to bring awareness to the most common causes of injury.

These top five causes were responsible for 80% of RI employee injuries in 2014:

  1. Sharps
  2. Chemical exposure
  3. Push, Pull, Lift
  4. Slip, Trip, Fall
  5. Burn
