Introducing the Imaging Innovation and Research Office (IRO)

Radiology Department Update

(From the February 2018 Issue of MedStat)

The Imaging and Innovation Research Office (IRO) in the Department of Radiology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital was established in early 2017 to serve as a “one-stop-shop” for physicians and investigators seeking advanced imaging capabilities in support of their clinical and research needs. The IRO’s administrators and coordinators work closely with other regulatory bodies within the hospital, including Clinical Research Services and the Institutional Review Board, to streamline scientific review, feasibility analysis, budget setup, and ultimately execution of research studies funded by private foundations, government agencies, and industry sponsors.

Scientists within the IRO oversee the department’s Pediatric Advanced Imaging Resource, where a centralized service for image analysis using both FDA-approved and research-specific software packages is provided by skilled analysts. IRO also oversees the department’s new 3D Printing Laboratory, where we provide state-of-the-art capability to create subject-specific digital and physical models of the anatomy for pre-procedural planning and patient education.

Within Radiology, the IRO aims to improve existing workflow in image data acquisition and post-processing for our technologists and physicians. The IRO further seeks and establishes collaborations with other pediatric and academic sites across the United States and internationally to translate promising imaging technology into clinical practice. A key focus for IRO is in the methodological development and validation of disease-specific quantitative imaging biomarkers. Another strategic emphasis is in developing abbreviated imaging protocols that facilitate free-breathing and reduced sedation and general anesthesia for our young patients.
