Just looking at Andrea and Alyson, it appears that they are normal, active, energetic pre-teens, but behind the scenes, there is a daily battle being waged with an unforgiving disease. Their daily regiment includes: pills (more than 20 each), nutritional supplements, additional calories, 5 inhaled medications, 80 minutes on the Vest which provides vital air-way clearance, and rigorous huff-coughing – and that is all when they are healthy! These are the daily twists and turns that the Hoffman family takes to make their daughters’ lives longer and stronger. Cystic fibrosis is a life-limiting disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. The average life-expectancy is in the mid-thirties.
Andrea and Alyson, age 12, have stayed relatively healthy in recent years but require the constant vigilance of the Cystic Fibrosis/Pulmonary Care Team at Nationwide Children’s, where Andrea and Alyson have been patients since they were four months of age. The girls visit the Pulmonary clinic every 6-8 weeks for check-ups. Both girls have had numerous surgeries, hospitalizations, and out-patient procedures. Andrea and Alyson have also participated in numerous research trials to help advance a cure for their disease.[hide]
