Aneurysmal Bone Cyst

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) occur more commonly in teens. The cysts are hollow and filled with blood. The tumors are not cancerous, but they damage bone and can affect surrounding tissue.

Dermoid Cyst

Dermoid cysts, also called epidermoid cysts or dermal/epidermal inclusion cysts, are masses in children and adults, most commonly found in the head, face, neck and upper chest. Dermoid cyst ablation is a minimally-invasive procedure that is an alternative to surgically removing the dermoid cyst.

Lymphatic Malformation

A lymphatic malformation is the result of abnormal formation and development during fetal development of the otherwise normal lymphatic vessels in the body. This is usually in one area of the body: neck, chest, abdomen and extremities.

Ranula

A ranula is a fluid collection or cyst that forms in the mouth under the tongue. It is filled with saliva that has leaked out of a damaged salivary gland. If a ranula stays in the mouth underneath the tongue it is called a simple ranula. If it grows down into the neck it is called a plunging ranula.

Sialorrhea (Drooling)

Sialorrhea, also known as hypersalivation or drooling, means excessive saliva flow. Anterior sialorrhea is when patients have forward spillage of saliva from their mouths onto their faces and clothes. Posterior sialorrhea is when patients have spillage of saliva from their mouths down their airways.

Salivary Gland Ablation

Prior to advancements at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, there were no successful interventional radiological (minimally invasive) therapies for ranulas and sialorrhea. The need for salivary gland ablation treatment was recognized, so our interventional radiologists developed a new procedure.

Treating Aneurysmal Bone Cysts

Using advanced imaging technology, the Interventional Radiology team at Nationwide Children's can insert medicine directly into an aneurysmal bone cyst through small needles or probes. It can be a game-changing treatment option for kids suffering from this painful condition.

Treating Dermoid Cysts

Dermoid cysts are the most common orbital/periorbital tumors found in the pediatric population. Traditionally, the only treatment option for a dermoid cyst was surgical removal of the cyst. The therapeutic challenges that come with surgery led to the development of a minimally-invasive treatment offered by Interventional Radiology at Nationwide Children's.

Treating Ranulas With Salivary Gland Ablation

Prior to advancements at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, there were no successful interventional radiological (minimally invasive) therapies for ranulas. The need for salivary gland ablation treatment was recognized, so our interventional radiologists developed a new procedure. This animation helps show and explain how patients with both simple ranulas and plunging (dividing) ranulas have been successfully treated without surgery for 10 years at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Dr. Shiels' Legacy

Dr. Shiels dedicated his life to advancing the field of radiology in order to provide the best care to children in our community, across the country and around the world. As we remember and celebrate his work, we will remain ever-grateful for his passionate mentorship of our radiology team and staff – some of whom have worked side by side with Dr. Shiels for more than a decade. Everything Dr. Shiels learned over his career, he taught to and instilled in his staff including his revolutionary advancements in interventional radiology and ultrasound; treating lymphatic malformations; bone tumor ablation, aneurysmal bone cyst and salivary gland ablation. His passion inspires the entire team to continue delivering the best possible care to children everywhere and his legacy will live in the advancements we continue to make here at Nationwide Children’s.
