Max and Family

Max's Story

When Max was two, his parents Mitchell and Raechel learned the unimaginable – Max was in respiratory and kidney failure and would need emergency hemodialysis to do the work for his failing kidneys. Almost two weeks after Max’s admission, kidney biopsy results showed he would require ongoing daily dialysis and eventually need a kidney transplant. His parents spent the next 58 days by his side at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“This news left us completely devastated as parents, but we made a commitment to absorb as much as we could from the team at Nationwide Children’s so we could be advocates for Max throughout his journey,” says Mitchell.

In December 2016, Max got his long-awaited miracle. He received a new kidney from his mom, who was a direct donor match. Today, Max is a healthy, vibrant kid who loves superheroes, riding his bike and playing at the playground with his big sister. Nothing holds him back. “The circumstances that we faced may have felt challenging at the time, but we are so blessed to have the team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on ‘Marvelous Maxwell’s’ side,” says Mitchell.

Reasons to Give

“Nationwide Children's Hospital has not only saved our daughter's life, but they have also given us hope - hope of a long, happy, life with Taylor. Instead of being fearful of what may or may not happen with Taylor's disease, we are able to feel confident that the doctors at Nationwide Children's are providing our daughter with the very best of care available.”- Shannon and Jeff Rockwell, parents of Taylor

“Our son, Cayson, was born just over three months early in our hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, and was transferred to Nationwide Children’s. Cayson was very sick and it was a scary moment for us. But we knew we were in the right place at Nationwide Children’s.”- Robin Menninger, Cayson’s mother.
