Knowledge is power. Find out more about your child’s diagnosis, including treatment plans, symptoms, and how to best take care of your child and yourself. Connect with other families who may have received a similar diagnosis. Look up support groups in your area, as many communities offer both parent, sibling and child support groups.
Maintain a support system. Some days it can feel hard to be connected to family and friends. But it is important to maintain a group of people who can support you and your family in challenging times.
Find out your options. It can be tough to get an appointment based on your location due to the shortage of mental health providers. Your insurance type might also play into your treatment. Please view our Help Finding a Provider for information.
Get treatment. Make sure the mental health provider you select is the right fit for your family. Communicate openly with your provider. Continue conversations with your primary care doctor about the treatment your child is receiving.
Take care of yourself. These situations can be very stressful for families. Make sure you are taking good care of yourself. This is an opportunity to model that self-care is each person’s responsibility. You will be most helpful to your child when you are at your best.
