Meet Two New Lab Program Directors

Huifei Liu, MD, PhDHuifei Liu, MD, PhD, has joined Nationwide Children’s as director of the Clinical Flow Cytometry Lab and staff hematopathologist in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She is also an assistant professor at the Ohio State University Department of Pathology. She is board certified in anatomic/clinical pathology and hematopathology. She has particular interests in applying and developing sophisticated ancillary studies including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular genetic tests for the diagnosis of hematologic malignancies.

She received her MD and MS degrees from Peking University Health Science Center (former Beijing Medical University) in China. After obtaining a PhD degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she did her postdoctoral training at Harvard medical school and Children’s Hospital Boston. She then completed the pathology residency training at Northwell Health Staten Island University Hospital in New York and Houston Methodist hospital in Texas. She finished her hematopathology fellowship training at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She served as an associate medical director for Hematologics, Inc in Seattle, Washington before she moved to Columbus, Ohio. 

Rachel Mariani, MDRachel Mariani, MD, joins Nationwide Children’s as a medical director of Hemostasis and staff pathologist in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She is also an assistant professor at The Ohio State University Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Mariani is board certified in pediatric pathology, hematology (pathology), anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Remaining active in professional membership activities, Dr. Mariani is a part of the International Society for Laboratory Hematology, North American Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Society for Hematopathology, Society for Pediatric Pathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Dr. Mariani received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. She completed postdoctoral training in anatomic pathology at The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, hematopathology and pediatric pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Prior to joining Nationwide Children’s, she was a staff pathologist at Presence St. Joseph Hospital and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
