Spotlight on Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE)
What is IPCE?
Interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) occurs when members from two or more professions learn with, from, and about each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes (ACCME, ACPE, ANCC 2015). Over the next several months, we will feature individual professions and focus on why IPCE is important to their success (and yours!)
Nursing Licensure and Education
By Susan Copeland, MS, RN, NPD-BC, PED-BC
In Ohio, there are three categories of licensed nurses: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). The education, licensure and scope of practice for all categories of Ohio nurses are regulated by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Nationwide Children’s Hospital currently employs all three categories of nurses throughout the organization.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): LPNs must complete a minimum of 30 weeks of full-time content (typically 12-24 months) to qualify to take the LPN licensing exam, the NCLEX-PN.
Registered Nurse (RN): The RNs scope of practice includes delivering nursing care that requires specialized knowledge, skill and judgment. While there are a variety of educational pathways to prepare individuals to take the NCLEX-RN licensing exam, Nationwide Children’s Hospital prefers to hire RNs with a bachelor’s degree or above. RNs hired without a bachelor’s degree must agree to obtain one within five years of hire. Many RNs validate their expert specialty knowledge, skills and clinical judgment by becoming certified in their nursing practice specialty. There are over 180 different types of nursing certifications.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN): To become licensed as an APRN in Ohio, the nurse must maintain their RN license, complete a graduate degree in their nursing specialty, and pass a national APRN certification exam specific to their specialty. Many APRNs have prescriptive authority and practice in collaboration with physicians via Standard Care Arrangements. APRNs are employed throughout Nationwide Children’s in the inpatient, ambulatory and operative areas.
Nursing Continuing Education Requirements
All nurses renew their license every two years. RNs and LPNs must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education within the two-year renewal period. One contact hour each renewal period must specifically relate to the Ohio Board of Nursing law and rules. An APRN must renew both their RN and APRN license every two years. To renew their APRN license, the nurse must maintain their national specialty certification and complete an additional 24 contact hours of continuing education beyond those required for their RN license renewal, with at least 12 of those hours consisting of advanced pharmacology content. Nurses may utilize in-person classes, webinars, independent study, and academic credit toward their licensure continuing education requirements. The Ohio Board of Nursing will accept continuing education credit from a variety of discipline-specific national accreditation systems and state regulatory boards, in addition to nursing-specific continuing education credit. RNs and APRNs who hold specialty certification beyond licensure will have additional continuing education requirements.
Impact of IPCE at Nationwide Children’s for Nurses
Joint accreditation supports continuing education planned and implemented “by the team, for the team.” Attending interprofessional education programs enables healthcare team members to learn from each other, communicate and work collaboratively to improve patient care. Nurses have benefited from the variety of educational experiences, enhanced interprofessional collaboration and improved patient outcomes supported by IPCE.
Susan Copeland, MS, RN, NPD-BC, PED-BC, began working at Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a staff RN and is currently a professional development nurse specialist in the Professional Development department. With over 30 years of experience in nursing education and professional development, Susan focuses on nursing continuing education and certification, including representing nursing on the IPCE Education Committee. Susan serves as a National surveyor for both the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Primary Accreditation and the Joint Accreditation programs. She also is a peer reviewer for continuing education applications and Continuing Education Committee member for the Ohio Nurses Association.
